Hemp Seed Oil

Hemp seed oil is very healthy and a must have in every kitchen.  With all the health benefits it has to offer, this is just one more thing to add to your list of hemp products.

Although it comes from the cannabis family, you can rest assured that you will not get “high” from it, because it doesn’t contain any psychoactive properties.

Hemp oil comes from the hemp seeds, which are rich in Omega-3, Omega-6, protein, vitamins and minerals.  

Do you know that in just one tablespoon of hemp oil, you are receiving your daily requirement of fatty acids?  

With the perfect ratio of Omega-6 to Omega-3, it has been shown to support heart health and aid in cardiovascular function.

This oil has a light, nutty flavor to it and you will find that the appearance is light to dark green.  Hemp seed oil can be used the same way you would use olive oil.

When Cooking With Hemp Seed Oil

Do keep in mind that hemp has a low smoke point, so you don’t want to use it for high temperature cooking or deep frying.  

If this oil is cooked at a temperature of 400 degrees or higher, it will change the molecular structure and cause unpleasant trans-fatty acids.  

If you are going to cook with hemp seed oil, use it for light cooking on a low temperature to keep the oil from smoking, such as sautéing meats and vegetables.

There are many different ways to incorporate hemp oil into your everyday foods.  Be creative and use your imagination or simply use a recipe.  

This oil makes an excellent addition to sauces, dips, pestos, marinade or just drizzle over a sandwich. 


Hemp Seed Oil Recipes

A few of my favorite ways to enjoy this oil and all its health benefits is to put it in a smoothie, splash it on my salad or mix it with some hummus.  

Here are a couple great recipes I would like to share with you:

Hemp Balsamic Vinaigrette Dressing

Directions:

  • 1 cup hemp oil
  • 1/4 cup
  • 1 sprig fresh thyme
  • 1 sprig fresh oregano
  • salt and pepper to taste

Whisk vinegar and oil together and pour over herbs and spices.  Store in a glass jar or container.  Keep in refrigerator overnight.

Hemp Buttermilk Vinaigrette

Directions:

  • 2 tablespoons white wine vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons hemp oil
  • 1/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1/4 cup mixed fresh herbs of your choice (such as basil, thyme, or oregano)
  • 1 clove garlic, pressed
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper

Place above ingredients into a blender.  Blend on low until all the herbs are mixed and chopped. 

Hemp oil should be refrigerated before and after opening
